When life gives you lemons, what do you do? It stands to reason that we can take the bitter taste head on or, as the common expression would tell you, make lemonade. Life can be bittersweet but there is a powerful lesson to be learned in understanding what we can gain from our hardships. Gather around and listen as London’s Bad Bounce shows you the beauty in the struggle with their new single, “Sugar and Spice”.

“Sugar and Spice” was produced and mixed by Kyle Ashbourne of Sugar Shack Recording Studios. The track was passed on to Dan Brodbeck for mastering, then released independently on October 15th, 2019.

“Highs and lows are the body blows that make you think twice, we’re alright, bittersweet all night, it’s just sugar and spice”

– Bad Bounce, from “Sugar and Spice”

Taking a note from life’s teachings, Bad Bounce have a knack for capturing experiences from both the positive and negative spectrums, then creating inspiring music from those ebbs and flows.

When asked what encouraged the direction for their music, the band responded by saying, “We wanted to write a song with the happiest of vibes while also discussing things that aren’t always happy. When life hands you both bitterness and sweetness, we must know what to do with those feelings.”

“Sugar and Spice” is no exception, as it thoroughly captures the group’s genuine ability to spin themes of hardship into a thoughtful and uplifting piece of music. As previously mentioned, the song is, by virtue, a lesson in being able to find harmony through adversity. The song, in and of itself, is a symbol of strength and perseverance, created with the perceived intention to help find the silver lining for those facing struggles. It’s also a dynamic listen in the sense that one could be at the peak of their game, yet still feel lost or uncertain on the inside.

Instrumentally inspired by the likes of Ben Howard, Young the Giant, The Beatles and Weezer, the song is, shall we say “bouncy”, despite its apparent themes surrounding struggle and uncertainty. The vocals are rich with cadence, backed with heart and shining clarity. This serves to envelope the charming lyrics with conviction and emotion, bringing the song, instrumentals and the feelings it captures full-circle.

The world needs more music that helps shed light to brighten darker lenses and Bad Bounce continues to hold their torch proud and high with this new single. So, if you’re looking for an upbeat and self-contemplating song or something sweet when things get sour, let your ears seek the sounds of “Sugar and Spice”!
